چکیده

Auditory training has been shown to be effective in the identification of non-native segmental distinctions. In this study, it was investigated whether such training is applicable to the acquisition of non-native suprasegmental contrasts, i.c., Mandarin tones. Using the high-variability paradigm, eight American learners of Mandarin were trained in eight sessions during the course of two weeks to identify the four tones in natural words produced by native Mandarin talkers. The trainees' identification accuracy revealed an average 21% increase from the pretest to the post-test, and the improvement gained in training was generalized to new stimuli (18% increase) and to new talkers and stimuli (25% increase). Moreover, the six-month retention test showed that the improvement was retained long after training by an average 21% increase from the pretest. The results are discussed in terms of non-native suprasegmental perceptual modification, and the analogies between L2 acquisition processes at the segmental and suprasegmental levels.

Categorizing Mandarin tones into listeners' native prosodic categories: the role of phonetic properties

Studies have shown that assimilating non-native tones to the categories of listeners’ native prosodic systems (e.g., tone, pitch-accent, and intonation) seems to be feasible (So, 2006; So and Best, 2008; So and Best, in press), and is consistent with the assumptions of the Perceptual Assimilation Model (Best, 1995, PAM). This raises an important question as to how adults perceive non-native lex...

Acoustic and perceptual evaluation of Mandarin tone productions before and after perceptual training.

Training American listeners to perceive Mandarin tones has been shown to be effective, with trainees' identification improving by 21%. Improvement also generalized to new stimuli and new talkers, and was retained when tested six months after training [Y. Wang et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 106, 3649-3658 (1999)]. The present study investigates whether the tone contrasts gained perceptually transfe...

Do English speakers assimilate Mandarin tones to English prosodic categories?

This study examined whether native English (NE) speakers perceive non-native tones of Mandarin in terms of their English intonational categories (Flat pitch, Question, Uncertainty, and Statement). The results indicated that NE listeners assimilated non-native tones to their native intonational categories, which share phonetic similarities with those ofMandarin tones. Thus, the assumption that a...

Dichotic perception of Mandarin tones by Chinese and American listeners.

The dichotic perception of Mandarin tones by native and nonnative listeners was examined in order to investigate the lateralization of lexical tone. Twenty American listeners with no tone language background and 20 Chinese listeners were asked to identify dichotically presented tone pairs by identifying which tone they heard in each ear. For the Chinese listeners, 57% of the total errors occurr...

Distinction between Mandarin Tones 2 and 3 for L1 and L2 Listeners

Among the four Mandarin lexical tones, Tone 2 and Tone 3 have been found to be the most confusable perceptually for both native speakers and non-native speakers. This study investigates whether the overall tone duration serves as a perceptual cue and whether L1 and L2 listeners weigh the cue in the same manner in distinguishing the two tones. In doing so, two perceptual experiments using durati...
